A beautiful, rare terrestrial or sometimes epiphytic bromeliad that forms a moderately large rosette of broad, tongue-shaped leaves and a large, upright inflorescence with overlapping, reddish bracts and smallish yellow flowers. Guzmania lychnis is found in paramo vegetation mainly between 2700 and 3200 m elevation in the Andes in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
