An attractive, smallish, weakly clustering, terrestrial bromeliad, newly described in 2011 from thornscrub on dry, rocky slopes at low elevations in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It forms rosettes of long, narrow, ascending, spiny leaves that are grayish green above and silvery below and can turn purplish red in drought conditions. Hardy to drought conditions, Hechtia michoacana is best grown on very well drained ground in dry tropical or warm temperate climates.
